June 18, 1994 ( Saturday) - Jill’s 22nd birthday.

And here we are in a state of confusion with Kath in the hospital and Bec there with her. We were slow getting around. I took on half of breakfast prep and made some pancakes. Jill made a tuna gravy to go on them as we had no syrup. I took a walk to give a search for the trailer part that is lost. Nothing. When I returned about 10:30am there was news that Beck had called and that possibly Kath could be released this afternoon. I was surprised that they had not yet administered an IV. We seem more concerned than Patrick because we know how little she has been able to drink in the last few days. She has to be seriously dehydrated.

After discussion, we decided to go ahead with a plan to go to Lola Island. And whereas the time was late and they (the Browns) were expecting a picnic, we decided to do something very unfancy for the sake of speed…rice and topping. I came close to making a cake, but gave up, again due to time. I had an idea for something unique—making milkshakes. We have the generator and the blender and ice—why not? We arrived at Lola at about 1pm and proceeded right away to set up for eating. We did. We even had soft drinks in ice. We sure blew their minds by making up those milkshakes. That made a real hit. We skied a bit. I took Joanna swimming. She sure likes it. I wrenched my neck on a fall where I was trying to get control of my hat.

We left around 5pm and went direct to the hospital, feeling that running in the boat would be more efficient than what it would require to go in the truck. We found Kath not better—but worse—and still no IV was given. We kind of forced Kath to drink some. I saw myself that she could keep no water down as she seemed to vomit up more than she drank. Our influence helped to trigger Dr. Patrick’s action toward an IV. He stuck it in just before we left around 6pm. Becki reported that Kath had just gone through a seizure of about 40 minutes—Wow!—it was getting bad! Her eyes rolling back, etc. I can’t understand what in the world Patrick was waiting for—what signs he is looking for before plugging her in the “drip.” Good grief! Thankful my questioning inspired action. We actually caught two fish before reaching home—“armor plates.” We were home about 7pm. Misak was there waiting for me. I knew he was coming, but temporarily forgot. We had to organize some games and activities for Independence celebrations. I showered quickly and met with him in the office. We had a good time. I inspired him with some different kinds of games and activities that he agreed would be good. Andy took off on the motorbike to go see mom regarding some of his schoolwork. He still wants to be done so he can go to Honiara. Now Jill is feeling sick.

When Andy returned about midnight, I asked about Kath. The report is that she is doing much better now and is even asking for drinks. Whew! Praise the Lord. I slept on Jill’s bed.
