Passage: Zechariah 14
Focus: "The LORD will be king over the whole earth. On that day there will be one LORD, and his name the only name.” Zechariah 14:9.

What I’m about to say may initially strike you as bizarre. But I think I’ve figured out what the world desperately needs in order to achieve the very best form of government over the affairs of men so as to render utopian equity and good for everyone: WE NEED A DICTATORSHIP! But not just any dictatorship—we need an absolutely benevolent one, where the dictator is completely loving and caring, knows everything about everything, and is morally perfect and infallible. Of course, for that to ever happen, he would need to be of divine origin—totally free of the NATURAL SIN NATURE.

Hey!—don’t you dare write this off as wild fantasy and of absolute impossibility. If it were entirely up to dirty-hearted humans, it would be that—impossible—as confirmed by the whole glaring panorama of human history. But we have right here in this text another Biblical promise (one of many) that such a One is forthcoming to set up just such a governmental system and rule with utopian perfection over the entire planet. Please recognize the link we have here with the core of our Christmas tradition: “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6). That quote is making my eyes water up with an urge to get emotional—and I don’t even know why—other than to recognize that everything within this Spirit-enlightened heart of mine resonates with the second-to-the-last verse of the Bible—“Amen. Come, Lord Jesus” (Revelation 22:20).

Please join me in believing this as fantastic future fact—that the Millennial Reign of Christ on earth (as well as His eternal reign thereafter) is as certain as anything else in this Book. I see no reason or value in doubting its authenticity. This is not on a par with futuristic fiction, not equal with metaphysical mythology, beyond fairy tale, and certainly outstrips any Santa Claus folklore. I am so convinced that this is exactly where human history is heading that if, for whatever reason, I were made to believe otherwise, I think it would be quite appropriate for me to just toss this Bible in the trash. If this prediction is not true, I have lost the basis for accepting or believing anything else it has to say.

No—I don’t see clearly how everything will fit together—nor do I think I need to. All I really need to know is HIM and His Word. After all, He’s the One Who promised, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away” (Matthew 24:35).

“We need not worry about what the future holds for us if we know who holds the future.”
